Second Statutory Reviews of Electoral Arrangements

This page contains links to the reports and resulting Statutory Instruments from our Second Statutory Reviews of Electoral Arrangements which took place between 1989 and 1994. These were the second reviews after the introduction of Region, Islands Area and District local authorities in Scotland by the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1973. These local authority areas were subsequently abolished after the introduction of the Local Government etc (Scotland) Act 1994.

The electoral divisions (abbreviated to EDs) from these Second Statutory Reviews for the Regional and Islands Area authorities were brought into force by the Statutory Instruments as noted below and used in elections on 5 May 1994. The wards (abbreviated to DWs) from these Second Statutory Reviews for the District authorities were not brought into force in that way, since those councils were abolished before the next elections after the completion of the reviews, which were due to take place in 1996. However, many of the District Wards were used in Directions from the Secretary of State for Scotland to define electoral arrangements for the initial elections in April 1995 for the new local authorities formed by the 1994 Act. These Directions are linked from the table below.

These EDs and DWs succeeded those resulting from our Initial Statutory Reviews of Electoral Arrangements.

During the same period, we also conducted a series of administrative area reviews of sections of the boundaries of local authority areas. Where these reviews resulted in changes to local authority boundaries, then there were also corresponding changes to EDs and DWs.

Detailed verbal descriptions of each ward boundary are contained in the reports and Statutory Instruments listed below.

The reports are available in Adobe Acrobat (PDF) format. Details of how to handle PDF files, and in particular large PDF files such as those on this website, are available in the Technical section of our Frequently Asked Questions.
